When the oppressive summer heat makes outdoor activities unbearable, chilling in the Mystic Caverns becomes an enticing option. Exploring the mesmerizing underground wonders of Arkansas offers a unique way to stay cool while discovering an awe-inspiring subterranean landscape.
Immerse in the cool depths of crystal dome
Curious tourists flock from various states such as Oklahoma, Texas, Idaho, Kansas, and Missouri to visit the Mystic Caverns in Arkansas, and even late this past summer, my parents and I joined the excited crowd. Admission, at a reasonable $15 each, grants access to both the Crystal Dome and Mystic Caverns, providing a full-day adventure beneath the earth’s surface.
Lisa, our knowledgeable guide, began the tour with a focus on safety and respect for the cave formations. As we descended steep, slippery steps into the cave, a dramatic temperature drop of 30 degrees provided immediate relief from the summer heat. The naturally amplified voice of our guide echoed through the cave, enhancing the mystical atmosphere.
Inside the Crystal Dome, living and still growing, we witnessed stunning formations of stalactites, stalagmites, and rimstone dams. Our guide used her flashlight to highlight interesting shapes resembling animals like walruses, alligators, and bears, delighting the children in our group. Even my father got involved, pointing out a stalagmite cluster that looked like a melting snowman, which our guide appreciatively added to her tour narrative.
As we climbed out of Crystal Dome, Lisa shared the cave’s history, including its dramatic cave lighting that once garnered a poor review due to its “cheesy” appearance. We experienced the cave in pitch darkness, a sensation both eerie and thrilling, marking the end of our exploration of this part of the caverns.
The stark contrast between the cave’s constant 59 degrees and the surface heat became apparent as we exited. Cold water provided by the gift shop offered a refreshing end to our tour, exemplifying the Southern hospitality of the region. The shop featured a variety of quartz crystals, a renowned product of Arkansas, capturing the natural beauty that characterizes the caves themselves.
Mystic caverns : a journey through history and wonder
The second part of our adventure led us into the Mystic Caverns, guided by another expert who introduced our larger group to the original entrance, a modest sinkhole created 200 years ago. The cave ceiling bore soot stains from decades-old pine torches and kerosene lanterns, remnants of its colorful past.
During Prohibition, the cave harbored a secret distillery, adding to its intriguing history. It also served as a venue for dances, where the natural acoustics of the chamber amplified musical performances. To demonstrate, one of the visitors was invited to sing “Amazing Grace,” her voice resonating beautifully within the cavern.
Despite the historical damage from ransacking and smoke, the Mystic Caverns remain larger and more accessible than Crystal Dome. Easier paths and wider spaces enhance the overall experience, making it suitable for families and large groups. At the tour’s end, we once again experienced the profound darkness of the caves, this time interrupted by the glow of smartphones as eager preteens shared their adventures online.
The sense of serenity and wonder that enveloped us in the Mystic Caverns offered a much-needed escape from the scorching sun, making it indeed a worthwhile adventure. Group rates and shaded picnic areas by the parking lot further encourage families and friends to enjoy leisurely, cool explorations together.
The Mystic Caverns’ tours, offered through fall and early winter, take on a special charm during October and December. The spooky ambiance for Halloween and the enchanting Christmas concerts in the operatic setting of the caves offer unique seasonal experiences.
