What will they think of next?

Misty Brown

November 9, 2004

Although this week's item is not battery operated and has no metal parts, it is still worthy of review by the Gadget Girl. Mars' AquaDrops(tm) sugar free hydrating mints are new on the Wal-Mart candy shelves next to the check out counters. I purchased a pack of twelve melon-flavored mints for only about $.85. The package boasts they will provide instant hydration and lasting refreshment. It also claims they won't promote tooth decay and are available in regular and sugar free varieties. I didn't see any other flavor varieties at Wal-Mart, but curious individuals can check out the website at www.aqua-drops.com. (Isn't it funny how EVERYTHING has an accompanying website?) As far as nutrition facts go, they are devoid of calories, fat, cholesterol, sodium, protein and other vitamins commonly listed. However, they do supply two grams of carbohydrates and two grams of sugar alcohols. Why I like this Gadget: _ It is perfect for people who use their mouths a lot. You know, vocal performance and communication majors. (Get your mind out of the gutter!) _ It won't cause tooth decay. _ It comes in a sugar free variety for Atkins dieters and diabetics. Why I don't like this Gadget: _ The package claims that excessive consumption may have a laxative effect. (This may be a good thing for people having trouble using the bathroom.) _ Only twelve come in a package. _ Wal-Mart didn't have any other flavors. I think the AquaDrops(tm) sugar free candies are quite tasty. My friends and roommates all enjoyed them and thought they would be great for when their mouths and throats felt hoarse and dry from singing or speaking. And if your hobbies lie elsewhere, these might also help you out. On the Gadget Girl scale, AquaDrops(tm) get a four out of five. If you enjoy trying different candies, I also suggest my favorite non-chocolate candy - Red Vines red licorice. They are fat-free and, in my opinion, much better than Twizzlers. You can get them at Wal-Mart or a dollar store for $1 per pound.
