Arkansas has never been the home of a professional sports team.

Although the state has been home to several minor league sports teams, it has never had a team that played in the NFL, NBA or the MLB.

“I think that the people of Arkansas could come together to form a fan base strong enough to support a professional sports team,” Amber Jo Webber, sophomore early childhood education major, said. “I guess what it really all comes down to is whether or not the state could support a professional sports team financially.”

The state has had several minor league sports teams in the past including two hockey teams, the Arkansas RiverBlades and the Arkansas GlacierCats, an NBA development league basketball team called the Arkansas RimRockers and an arena football team called the Arkansas Twisters. The Twisters became the Arkansas Diamonds before moving to Texas and becoming the Allen Wranglers and finally changing their name to the Texas Revolution.

Arkansas is still home to two minor league baseball teams, the Arkansas Travelers and the Northwest Arkansas Naturals. Both teams play in the minor league Texas League.

“I think that the state’s best bet when thinking about a professional sports team would be a pro basketball team that played its home games at Verizon Arena in Little Rock,” Kennedy Tillman, sophomore early childhood education major, said. “It’s located in the central part of the state, it’s the capital and it’s the most populated city in Arkansas.”
