After a long year of work and determination, Arkadelphia’s first butcher shop is now complete and open for business.

Owner and CEO James Pruitt, who is from Gurdon but now resides in Arkadelphia, has waited a long time for this. “It’s been my dream as far back as I can remember. Owning my own business and doing what I love has been my motivation,” said Pruitt. “I’ve always considered myself as a great cook and griller when it comes to meat and seafood. I have a great knowledge of how different meats are cooked and prepared. People tend to agree with me about my cooking as well,”

Opening the shop did come with many obstacles, however. Pruitt bought the vacant building that was formerly Waits Gun & Pawn Video Rental in the summer of 2020. “It needed a complete overhaul,” said Pruitt as the building was totally in need of an upgrade. Covid-19 was a big factor as well in the purchase. “We honestly didn’t know if it was going to be worth it in the long run because of Covid. It changed everyone’s perspective on how meat prepping and standing in close range would work in such a small area,”

Through months of negotiations Pruitt, his daughter Kaleigh, and girl-friend Tamra began the process of putting it all together last fall. Everything was going smoothly until the prices of lumber shot up in early 2020. “Our butcher room is basically brand new and it almost didn’t happen with how much lumber was,” said Pruitt. Prices were seen at astronomical numbers in the beginning of May. The original opening date was supposed to be mid-June until the cost shot up forcing the opening day to be set at a later date.

Before long, however, Pruitt and his crew were back at it and this time, they would not be stopped by any mishaps, as the doors would open September 28th, 2021. “It’s a great feeling to finally be here. We’re the only true Butcher Shop in the Clark County region and have already gotten so much support,” said Pruitt. ]

Salt and Grain is open Tuesday through Friday from 10:00 a.m to 6:00 p.m, while open on Saturdays from 10:00 a.m to 2:00 p.m.
