Henderson suffers shut out loss on road trip to Harding

Volleyball returned to the court on Feb. 2 to face off against the Lady Bisons of Harding. This was the Reddies’ second match of the year, and they looked to improve on their 1-0 record.

Henderson started the first set on a 6-1 scoring run, forcing a Harding timeout. Junior setter Taylor Scalzi came in the game and had an instant impact. She ‘set up’ the Reddies to regain the set advantage.

Neither team was able to accumulate a lead larger than five points in set one. However, four points deemed sufficient for Harding to spike their way to a 25-21 win in set one.

The Lady Bisons picked up where they left off for the second set. After interchanging leads to start set two, Harding pulled away again, and HSU wanted a timeout, trailing 16-12.

Reddies’ junior outside hitter Mya Robinson recorded three straight kills to keep Henderson within striking distance. Clutch plays down the stretch by Mya weren’t enough to make a comeback in the second game, as Harding won the second set, 25-18, taking a commanding 2-0 match lead.

The third set began with balanced play on both sides of the net. The lead didn’t get out of control, that is until Harding went up, 12-7, and Henderson wanted to disrupt the Lady Bisons’ rhythm with a timeout. The Reddies’ opponents avoided losing their advantage by getting some crucial calls in their favor from the officiating crew.

The home team from Searcy went on yet another 4-0 run as their lead was up to six, 18-11. Henderson came out of a timeout attacking and managed to decrease their deficit to two scores. Aware of their opportunity for a match sweep, the Lady Bisons exhausted their energy in a final scoring sequence to win the set, 25-20, and ultimately win the match in a 3-0 shutout fashion.

Harding was able to secure the victory by committing fewer errors than HSU, 20-17. The Lady Bisons outscored the Reddies 52-31 for the entire match. Seven of Harding’s points came from serves that HSU was not able to return, resulting in aces. Henderson goes to 1-1 on the season.

Henderson State travels to Arkansas Tech Feb. 9 for another conference matchup against a divisional opponent.
