Will 2020 Bring a Perfect Season?

Men’s Women’s Hoops Look to Rebound From 2018-19 Season

Hoops season is approaching and Henderson women’s hoops are gearing up for another prolific season. The Reddies return all five starters for the previous season, including senior guards Pink Jones, who led the team in scoring and PPG, Haley Estes, the team’s leader in three-pointers (3rd all-time), and senior forward Karrington Whaley, the Reddies’ rim protector.

HSU finished the 2018-19 season with an overall record of 18-11 and 13-9 in conference play. They would make the GAC tournament as the fifth seed. With only a single win in the GAC tournament since the conference’s forming in 2011, the Reddies would not find their second as they would fall to four seed Harding in the quarterfinal round.

Head coach Jill Thomas returns for her fourth season at HSU, coaching the Reddies to an 84-86 record since 2013 and a GAC record of 66-62.

On the men’s side, coach Jimmy Elgas coached the Reddies to a 19-11 record with a GAC record of 13-9. The men’s season was cut short by the eventual back-to-back GAC champs in Southern Nazarene. The Reddies are returning senior guard Rel Johnson, who led the team in scoring with a 12.2 PPG average. Last year’s leading rebounder Mike Fofana (senior forward) returns to the lineup, along with junior forward Raekwon Rodgers who shot 59% from the field in the 2018-19 season.

They will open the season in Searcy as they compete against Missouri State and Emporia State on Nov. 8 and 9, respectively.
