The men’s
team played
against division
one University of
Louisiana at Monroe
in an exhibition
matchup and hung
with them well in
the first half, before
ULM separated
themselves for the
win. The game did
not count towards
either teams winloss
record but was
good for the Reddies
to get a simulation
before getting the
season started. The
men’s team has a few
new faces with five
incoming freshmen
and four athletes
transferring in.
Led by Hhead
coach Jimmy Elgas
the Reddies look to
do something special
this season. With
a lot of new faces
cohesion within the
team was a priority
this past offseason, to
do that the team did
bonding activities
“We made them
spend time with each
other and I know
that’s going to pay
off,” Coach Elgas
said. It appears that
it is paying off early
after the Reddies
grabbed their first
win in a close game
with the University
of Mary. The Reddies
won 66-63 to start
the season off right
They also
defeated Augustana,
who were the
2016 DII national
champion. They won
the rebound battle
36-33 and shot 55%
from three. Last
year the Men’s team
finished ninth in
the Great American
Conference, “This
league is a very
good league and the
margin of error of
each team is very
small” coach Elgas
The Womens
team won their two
opening games
as well. Led by
coach Jill Thomas
the Reddies were
projected to finish
4th in the conference,
following a season
where they went
20-9 with a 16-6
conference record.
Henderson defeated
Ouachita Baptist in
the opening round
of the GAC before
falling to Arkansas
Tech in the semi-final
game. On the court,
the Reddies will be
led by junior guard
Pink Jones who was
1st team – All GAC
last season.
The Reddies
traveled to Bolivar,
Missouri to play
in the Southwest
Baptist Classic.
Their first game was
against Southwest
Baptist University.
They were led by
Hailey Estes, who
had 25 points and
Jones who had 23
points. The Reddies
won 96-83.
With that win the
team would go on
to face Sioux Falls.
There was a point
where Henderson
led 63-48 and they
didn’t look back, as
they went on to win
75-63 behind Este’s
21 points and Jones’s
20 points. Following
her performance,
Pink Jones was
named GAC player
of the week.
